Amitabh Bachchan has been rejected by CPM as the brand ambassador of Kerala Tourism.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) has said that Amitabh is already appointed as Brand Ambassador of tourism in Gujarat and the Left Front Government in Kerala must not have him as the Brand Ambassador.

Sitaram Yechury, CPM Polit Bureau Member, told that the central leadership of CPM does not like the idea of having Amitabh Bachchan as the brand ambassador.

Big B who was in Kerala for few events, answered in a TV interview that he would like to become Kerala tourism’s brand ambassador. As good as it can be, Kerala Tourism wrote to him and they received a positive answer.

While the Kerala Tourism Minister agrees that quite a few people have expressed their displeasure in choosing Amitabh as the tourism ambassador, he told nothing has been confirmed yet. He also added that opposition from the main CPM office in Delhi was quite a big surprise to all them.

Big surprises or not, Big B wouldn’t want to be rejected and then dejected.

He has been the heart throb of Bollywood for decades now, and the audiences have been witness to the varied characters he has played throughout his career, he is Salman Khan. The latest development is that Sallu bhai is all set to star in the remake of the south film Bodyguard.

The film which is being produced by Atul Agnihotri is still in the adaptation stages. However, Atul confirms saying, “Yes. Even though we are still adapting the script to fit the Bollywood audiences, we have confirmed Salman to play the lead role in it, while for the leading lady we are yet to decide and are keeping the options open.”

The original, which was directed by Siddiqui, will have him behind the camera for the remake as well, says Atul, “As for the direction of the film, I have known Siddiqui for quite some time now. In fact, we were in talks when he was making the film down south. And now after it has acclaimed fame, I think there is no one better to direct it than him.”

However, a little while ago there had been rumours that said that the rights for the film were with Boney Kapoor, to which Atul firmly states, “This is total rubbish. If there was anything like that Boney would have definitely told me, the rights for the remake have always been with me.”

Further Atul tells us, “Right now, we are working on the adaptation of the film. Once this is complete, we will launch the making and finalize of the lyrics for the songs. Since most of the film has a lot of outdoor shoots, we are looking to start the shoot some where in the last three months of this year, while keeping in mind a tentative summer release for the film.”

Priyanka Chopra played 12 characters in “What’s Your Raashee?” and now Bipasha Basu is doing much the same in “Pankh” where she sports nine different looks.

The actress plays an imaginary character in director Sudipto Chattopadhyay’s film and her different looks will reflect the attitude and mood of the hero, played by debutant Maradona Rebello. Releasing April 2, it is produced by Sanjay Gupta.

According to Bipasha, whenever Maradona feels vulnerable, she has been given a soft look and whenever he is agitated or in self doubt, she is made to look harsh.

Bipasha also feels that designing her look was the complete teamwork of designer Rocky S, director Sudipto Chattopadhyaya and new age producer Sanjay Gupta, who were instrumental and involved in designing the right lookto match the attitude of the character.

“Pankh” traces the life of a boy (Rebello) who plays a female artiste as a child in movies. When he grows up and wants to be launched as a hero, he goes through gender confusion and falls in love with an imaginary actress, played by Bipasha.

“‘Pankh’ is a wild ride through the underbelly of the film industry. Bipasha plays an alter ego, a fantasy and we wanted her to look like the two divas - Sophia Loren and Liza Minelli from ‘Cabaret’. The conception and execution of the looks were a collaborative effort between the Sudipto, the director and designers Rocky S and Gavin Miguel,” Gupta said in a press statement.

The film also features Mahesh Manjrekar, Lillette Dubey, Ronit Roy, Sanjeeda Sheikh and newcomer Amit Purohit.

The source adds, the reason why they chose Ranbir is because, the ITC officials felt that Ranbir was the perfect fit for the brand as he personifies the youthfulness, vibrancy and panache that the brand stands for.

With this endorsement, it looks like Ranbir is all set to give a marathon run to all the other superstars, who were till now, the ‘market leaders’ when it came to brands endorsements.

As for Kat’s no kissing deal, the actress might just give a waiver this time since she is quite keen to work with Basu. “Even though Kat has a no-kissing clause in her contract, there`s a chance that she might drop that one for this film,” adds the source.

Visitors to the set say it was pleasant to see the once hoity-toity Rani share jokes and tips with Vidya. Of course Vidya is thrilled.

She was overheard saying, “Rani is such a doll. She is so simple and uncomplicated. We get along like a house on fire.” Honestly, Rani was this sweet-natured girl even earlier. For those who remember history, Rani was best friends with Preity Zinta, Aishwarya Rai and even Kareena Kapoor in the initial phase of her career. It is only after she made it to the position of Queen Bee that she started keeping a distance.

Her new found ‘friendly’ nature could only mean two things. Either Rani has rediscovered her old self (which is great) or she’s making an exception for Vidya, the current flavour of the season, who no one can ignore.

Actor Preity Zinta is a very busy woman these days.

First of all, for the next one-and-a-half months her prime objective will be to ensure that her cricket team does well in the ongoing T20 tournament.

Then, once the tournament is over, she will take up a cause in a big way—she wants to campaign against corruption that ‘prevails at every tier of the state government’. For this she has decided to turn into an activist. “I had wanted to become an activist for a long time. I think the time has come,” says Preity.

In the midst of all this, we ask her about rumours of her wanting to sell off her stake in her cricket team for ‘personal’ reasons. She rubbishes them saying, “I plan to stay with the team as long as I can. Personal relations or equations don’t matter when we are working. My relation with the other owners and members of my team is as cohesive as any other team in the tournament.”

Coming back to the activist streak in her, Preity says Maharashtra would have taken long strides towards development had it not been for the ‘disease’ of people expecting their palms to be greased at all levels. “I don’t want to sound as if I am comparing Maharashtra with another state. But I’ve been to Gujarat and I saw that the level of corruption there is much less. When I saw that I wished the same thing would happen in Maharashtra,” she says.

When asked what she would promote during her campaign against corruption, she says, “I will advocate that a cut be given to government employees against every ‘lucrative’ project that is passed or completed by them. Or, maybe a part of the profits after a project gets completed successfully. In most private companies you get the work done and then you are rewarded with a small portion of the profit that comes in. I think if that system is put in place, then the government would soon be corruption free.”

Shilpa Shetty and hubby Raj Kundra may be busy touring with their IPL team- Rajasthan Royals but that hasn’t stopped them from expanding their other business interests. Shilpa and Raj recently announced the opening of their new nightclub called ‘Royalty’ in Mumbai. The high end club is located at the same place where popular hotspot ‘Poison‘ was earlier situated.

After their closely fought match against the Mumbai Indians on Saturday, Shilpa and Raj threw a lavish bash at their new club Royalty. The bash saw some bigwigs in attendance including Sanjay Dutt, Fardeen Khan, Harman Baweja, Ameesha, Kabir Bedi, Shamita Shetty and Jackie Shroff.

One will have to wait and watch if this nightclub turns out to be a hotspot for Bollywood’s party animals in the days to come.

IshQ Bector said that he would gift Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone 100 teddy bears if she agrees to feature in a video.

Bector may have a music-bank of over a hundred-and-fifty songs, but when it comes to dedicating one for that ‘special someone’, he dreams only about the sensuous Deepika Padukone. That could be the reason why he has devoted an entire song titled “Tu hi meri angel, tu hi meri dream girl” to the Bollywood charmer.

“It’s an out-and-out fun romantic number and if Deepika agrees to feature in its video, I’ll gift her a hundred teddy bears,” says IshQ, with a mischievous smile.

The mad-max music import from Canada, who has written, sung and composed the song, intends to release it as a single, or try to get it added in one of her upcoming films like ‘Lafange Parinde’, ‘Khelenge Hum Jee Jaan Se’ or ‘Break Ke Baad’.

Let’s see! If IshQ plays his cards jee jaan se, the Padukone gal might just fulfill his ‘angelic dream’ and even get to enjoy the company of a hundred teddies.

At least there is someone who shows the mirror to the naked king. Conceptualized from the extremely famous Golden Raspberry Awards, AKA Razzies, we too have an award for all those people who make such bad movies. This year also saw the Golden Kela awards. At one place it has some very funny and ridiculous categories; on the other hand it has a lot of big names this year.

Let’s start with worst actor and actress. We all know that Kambakkht Ishq was such a pain in the…ahem (yes, that part of the body!), so someone had to pay for it. And the pout queen Kareena Kapoor got the Kela for being the worst actress of the year. Whereas Harman Baweja the extremely annoying copy of Hrithik Roshan, got the award for the worst actor for his movie What’s Your Rashee.

The worst film again went to Kambakkht Ishq, and the man who took Bollywood to the Oscar’s got the Worst Director award for What’s Your Rashee.

Chandni Chowk To China landed with two Kelas under worst supporting actor (male and female) category and Ranvir Shorey and Deepika Padukone respectively were the proud winners.

Apart from this, there were some interesting categories like ‘Bas Kijiye Bahut Ho Gaya’. It felicitated Madhur Bhandarkar and asked him to stop making movies. There was also ‘Baawra Ho Gaya Hai Ke’ award which went to Sylvester Stallone and Denise Richards because they were associated to Kambakkht Ishq.

Abhishek Bachcan won the Dara Singh Award for worst accent in Delhi-6, and he said that he is happy because Delhi 6 Won at least one award.

The host of the night was MTV VJ Cyrus Broacha, and he got the ‘Cyrus Broacha Memorial Award’. He said, “It’s great. I’m thrilled. I hope to win this award every year, If we want to abuse, we should abuse everybody.”

The years spent by Kerala Tourism searching for a brand ambassador to promote its tourism products are nearing an end with Hindi film actor Amitabh Bachchan expressing willingness to become the brand ambassador of God’s Own Country.

The actor’s willingness was conveyed to Minister for Tourism and Home Kodiyeri Balakrishnan in a letter.

Mr. Bachchan, who is also the brand ambassador of Gujarat, said he would like to go ahead with the offer extended to him by the State he loves.

Mr. Bachchan expressed his willingness in an interview to a Malayalam satellite channel during his visit to the State recently to present an award to Oscar-winning sound technician Resul Pookutty.

Discussions

Official sources said Mr. Balakrishnan had written to the actor about Kerala Tourism’s readiness to hold discussions with him. On the basis of a letter from Mr. Bachchan to depute a Kerala Tourism official to work out the details, the Minister wrote back thanking the actor for the gesture.

The Minister’s office is in touch with the actor’s office in Mumbai.

“The Minister has deputed the Director of Tourism M. Sivasankar to hold talks with Mr. Bachchan and work out the details. The meeting will take place next week probably,” official sources told us.

The gesture has come at a time when Kerala is concentrating on domestic tourists to overcome the drop in the foreign tourist arrivals on account of global economic recession.

Unsuccessful attempts

In 2006, the tourism authorities had unsuccessfully tried to rope in Mr. Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai as brand ambassadors. The attempt was made when the Mr. Bachchan arrived in the hill resort of Munnar for shooting in Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘ Nishabd. ‘

Over the years, Kerala Tourism has roped in Malayalam actor Jayaram as brand ambassador for the Vazhiyooram project and hindi television actors like Smriti Irani, known as “Amitabh Bachchan of TV,” and “Nine p.m. girl” Mona Vasu to promote tourism destinations among the upmarket clientele among the domestic tourists.

The State also unsuccessfully tried to rope in action hero Jackie Chan.

Nikhil Advani being a good friend of the ad filmmaker showed some promotional videos and scenes of his upcoming production Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai. Says a source, “The makers were blown away by Jackie and insisted that they wanted her in the ad.” So convinced were they about Jackie that when the dates of the commercial and the promotional video of the film were clashing, the makers adjusted their dates to suit Jacqueline’s. As a matter of fact even after the commercial, the entire team couldn’t stop raving about her.

Well Jacqueline, just like Pepsi, seems like you too have a Wow Factor in you.

Now this development really gets the antennas stand right up with all attention reserved for what next is really in the offing. Believe it or not but a major Hollywood-Bollywood collaboration is right up in the anvil and two of the bigger superstars from different ends of the world are all set to share screen space. The film in question is Xtrme City and the men in question - hold your breath - Shah Rukh Khan and Leonardo Di Caprio.

Yes, even though all of this seemed like a dream till a few years back, it is indeed turning out to be a reality since work is progressing on brisk speed to get the scripting in place for the film. There is quite some action on pre-production front as well and Xtrme City is looking positive at going on floors by end of 2010. If that indeed happens, Shah Rukh can well be expected to be really busy all through 2010 and 2011 with Ra 1 and the sequel of Don required to be wrapped up before Xtrme City starts taking a shape.

How it happened

Informs our source, “Not many know but when Shah Rukh visited Berlin for the premiere of My Name Is Khan, his agenda also included a groundbreaking movie deal. He was power-dining with Hollywood bigwigs like director Martin Scorsese and screenplay writer Paul Schrader over the project which is touted to star Bollywood’s reigning superstar with Hollywood heartthrob Leonardo Di Caprio. Karan Johar, David Weisman and screenplay writer Mushtaq Shiekh were present at the meeting.”

The film doesn’t really come as a complete piece of surprise though. Yes, Shah Rukh’s presence has raised quite a few eyebrows though one could have expected to see this coming since his close friend and associate Mushtaq Shiekh had already been commissioned to write the film. The director was finalised as Paul Schrader, the same man who had made Robert De Niro come up with a career defining act in Taxi Driver. On the other hand, Mushtaq has made Shah Rukh Khan go over the top as never before in Om Shanti Om.

When Paul Schrader had earlier visited India in 2008, he had indeed talked about collaborating on a project that would marry Indian ethos with Western sentiment. His Xtrme City was touted to combine the cinematic traditions of both Bollywood and Hollywood and provide wholesome cross-culture entertainment. For this purpose, he had written the film along with Mushtaq who does come with a super strong Shah Rukh connection. In the past, he has authored bestselling biographies for Shah Rukh Khan like ‘SRK: Still Reading Khan’ and ‘Shah Rukh Can’. He has also written books like ‘The Making of Asoka’, ‘Devdas - The Indian Hamlet’ and ‘The Making of Om Shanti Om’. Of course his claim to fame are screenwriting credits for Om Shanti Om, Billu and Shah Rukh’s under production Ra 1.

At that time, another piece of announcement had stated - “This groundbreaking production will showcase a Bollywood mega-star and a Hollywood movie-star sharing top billing in a major motion picture. The film is destined for both the subcontinent and international markets. In fact, Xtrme City is already in the process of casting the two star leads. The film is going to be a hugely mounted affair with a multi million budget.”

The superstars

However, not many would have assumed that the two leads would be none other than Shah Rukh Khan and Leonardo Di Caprio. Meanwhile, Paul Schrader had been hinting all along that he would work only with the biggest Bollywood star and that is why he was keen to sign Shah Rukh for the leading role. It was also quite clear that if the two actors indeed sign up on the dotted line to star in the multi-million project, both Shah Rukh and Leonardo Di Caprio would get top billing. Xtrme City will be an action-thriller set in Mumbai covering the criminal underbelly of the city.

When contacted, Mushtaq Shiekh said, “It’s too premature to discuss the casting of the film. But yes, Shah Rukh and Leonardo did meet up in Berlin. The meeting was just a casual one; they were there for the premiere of their films Shutter Island and My Name Is Khan respectively. The highlight of the meeting was Karan Johar who entertained everyone with absolutely delightful Bollywood trivia.”

On the other hand Paul Schrader, who has directed 18 films, confirms that the Hollywood-Bollywood collaboration is certainly on. “I hadn’t thought about working in India”, says the man who has previously worked in Japan, Italy, Romania, Israel and Morocco. However, now I see Bollywood as the next great frontier. Xtrme City is a cross-cultural entertainment that merges the cinematic traditions of Bollywood and Hollywood. I am indeed excited to make a film which is accessible and meaningful to both Indian and American cultures.”

Adds Mushtaq, “Working on Xtrme City with a master screenwriter like Paul Schrader has been exhilarating and a marvellous illumination for me. He is tireless. We kept at it until achieving a perfect emotional balance for our story. We wanted to reveal the best of each world in surprising, entertaining, inspiring ways. That’s what I like about Paul’s screenplay. Ours is a film that never takes either culture for granted.”

The Martin Scorcese factor

Meanwhile another big name, Martin Scorcese, too turned out to be quite a handful in this meeting that saw Shah Rukh Khan, Leonardo Di Caprio, Karan Johar, Paul Schrader and Mushtaq Shiekh coming together. The man who has directed Leonardo in Shutter Island, The Departed, The Aviator and Gangs of New York in the past is pretty abreast with the going-ons in Bollywood as well.

“I was amazed by how Martin Scorsese was completely in sync with all that is happening in Bollywood. His knowledge about old Hindi films left me shocked”, says Mushtaq in awe, “In that one room, seeing such gigantic movie business folks was almost like seeing a mega Hollywood-Bollywood movie live. Their interest in Bollywood cinema is just as animated as how we marvel at their film culture.”

The release

Adds the source, “The film is aiming for a late 2010 shoot in Mumbai, New York and the Persian Gulf. The makers are hoping for a 2011 release. As with many Bollywood films, Xtrme City will integrate thriller, drama and comedy elements. The movie will be family-friendly though there would certainly be elements of violence. However, sex will be downplayed, though there would be quintessential song and dance routines.”

Well, My Name Is Khan has already earned its stripes in America by being declared the highest grossing ’specialty film’ of 2010. As an ambassador, she will raise awareness on HIV prevention, treatment, care and support, with an emphasis on women and children. Zinta is even planning to involve her Indian Premiere League cricket team, Kings XI, in the awareness programme.

“The team members of Kings XI, they will be involved in a public service film to talk about HIV-AIDS. We are also in our first game with Delhi Daredevils, which is on March 13, going to have a toss done by a person living with HIV,” Zinta said.

“We will be doing a lot of on-ground…going and creating awareness, meeting people living with HIV. I think this is the first step and there is lots more to come,” she added.

She also said that awareness is also required in villages besides in the cities.

“I think although there are so many awareness programmes being done amongst the people but something is still lacking. People need to put more efforts in the awareness programmes,” Zinta said.

“Till now awareness programmes were conducted only in the cities but now we shall have to conduct it in the villages and rural areas of the country as well,” she added.

UNAIDS is a joint venture of the United Nations, bringing together the efforts and resources of ten UN organizations to help the world prevent new HIV infections, disseminate care for people living with HIV, and mitigate the impact of the epidemic.

The 2006 estimates of the National Aids Control Organization (NACO) suggest that about 2.4 million Indians are currently living with HIV.

Says Rana, “The political message of the film is definitely not restricted to Andhra Pradesh. I’d like to remake the film into Tamil and then maybe Hindi. After I do Rohan Sippy’s film in Hindi, I’d like to do Leader in Hindi.”

Explains Rana, “We’ve tried to show the difference between a politician and a leader. We need responsible leaders. I play an honest leader, a Chief Minister. We’ve heard so many CMs being sworn in. We didn’t know what their oath means. From the time we were children we read about Sardar Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Mahatma Gandhi. Today my 5-year old nephew is studying about the same national leaders. Where are the political heroes of and for the new generation?” Says Rana Daggubati, “My role is actually an amalgamation of a whole lot of younger politicians from Rahul Gandhi to Barak Obama. For months my laptop would be open showing profiles of international politicians. Locally my reference points were Rahul Gandhi, Milind Deora and Sachin Pilot. Today’s youth - and I mean people from the age of 19 to 25 - is fully knowledge of present-day politics. They’re becoming more and more politically savvy. It’s a beautiful direction in which we’re heading. I thought the youngsters my age would enjoy the love story. But they connect more with the politics in Leader.”

Apparently, a song ‘Maa Telugu Talli‘ in Leader had to be changed because of the current political disturbances in Andhra Pradesh.

Rana plays it safe by saying, “There were some rumours about removing the song. We did alter it during the shooting because we understand the sensitivity of the issue.”

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, an Indian matrimonial website held a poll asking the voters to pick their favourite bahu (daughter-in-law) from Bollywood. Among the names contending for the title were Aishwarya Rai, Kajol, Gauri Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Twinkle Khanna, Kiran Rao and Malaika Arora.

But it’s Kajol who emerged the favourite bahu after getting 43.08 percent votes in the poll in which 250,000 women participated. Surprisingly, Kajol scored over Ash, who many thought would top the poll.

Gourav Rakshit, business head of shaadi.com is quoted as saying: “The results show that today the women are looking to be more independent and are willing to adopt stronger roles in their life. They believe in themselves and aspire to emulate top achievers in their field.”

Kajol has been married to Ajay Devgan for 11 years now. She put her acting career aside to raise her daughter Nysa, who’s quite grown up now. However, Kajol still remains very selective about the films she does because her daughter and her family continues to be her priority.

However, she was saddened by the fact that there was no electricity whatsoever in the village because of which the weavers had no choice but to work in darkness with only candles as a source of light. Moved by their plight, Kareena has now given them a Rs 3 lakh (approximate) cheque to raise a solar energy plant and within two months the village will have electricity.

A source said, “Kareena had gone to Chanderi village in MP with Aamir Khan for the promotion of 3 Idiots. The weavers gave her the handmade saree and she also had dinner with them. However, she realised that it was extremely difficult for these workers to weave as there was no electricity in their village.

Consequently, she has now given the cheque to the village officials and is also speaking to several Bollywood friends to join her in the cause to bring electricity to all villages in the country. She didn’t want to only talk about it but to also come forward and do something constructive.”

Kareena said, “I was a little shocked to see how these people work. At the end of the day it’s our country and I learnt that there are about 100 villages in the country which have no electricity. I have handed over a cheque to the concerned authorities to build a solar energy plant. It’s a nominal amount but it can bring smiles to many faces, which is why I wanted to do this. I am told that in about two months, the plant will be built and there will be electricity in Chanderi.

I am also going to ask my friends in the film industry to come forward and make a difference,” she said.

Ever since she made her debut with the film Slumdog Millionaire, Freida has been creating waves from the film’s victory at the Oscars, to her being signed on for Woody Allen’s next. She is certainly going places. However, the latest news is that Freida has been signed on for yet another Hollywood film War of The Gods.

While Freida has completed her shooting Woody Allen’s You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger opposite Josh Brolin and Naomi Watts, and Israeli film Miral, which has been directed by Julian Schnabel, she will be working in War of The Gods which is based on Greek mythology and will be directed by Tarsem Singh. It begins production in April.

The story revolves around the warrior Theseus, who leads his men into battle with the Greek gods to defeat evil and the other elder gods in order to save mankind.

Freida who plays a Greek priestess in the film, portrays Phaedra, an oracle priestess who joins Theseus, to prevent the cataclysmic war from erupting.

The film which is scheduled to go on floors this April is being produced by Gianni Nunnari of Hollywood Gang Prods, Mark Canton of Atmosphere Entertainment and Relativity topper Ryan Kavanaugh.

Everyone’s speculating about DON 2. Farhan Akhtar, who directed the SRK starrer DON, had announced the sequel to the film quite some time back. While Farhan got busy with his acting assignments and SRK too decided to work on RAB NE BANA DI JODI first and MY NAME IS KHAN next, one kept wondering when Farhan and SRK would start the next instalment of DON.

“DON 2 will start in October this year. We’ve locked the script and also the locations,” Farhan and his producer-partner Ritesh Sidhwani tell me. The new DON will have two leading ladies. “Priyanka Chopra will be one of them. The second will be finalized in due course,” Farhan states.

There’s talk that the producers are also planning to start ROCK ON 2. “A lot of people want us to do that. Right now Abhishek [Kapoor, the director of ROCK ON] is working on another script. But if he finds a script that looks like a worthy follow up to ROCK ON, why not?” Farhan clarifies.

Well-known fashion designer Rohit Bal suffered a heart attack yesterday. The designer has since been admitted to Medanta Medicity in Gurgaon. Bal, 42, suffered an attack at his Defence Colony residence and he was soon rushed to the hospital.

Shah Rukh Khan doesn’t sleep. Or so it seems. He landed in Mumbai on Thursday from Dubai after a show, but shows no sign of strain or jetlag. Just before Dubai the mega-star was in Berlin for the film festival negotiating the attention of hundreds of screaming fans.

What we don’t know is that Shah Rukh met and bonded in Berlin with American auteur director Martin Scorsese and his favourite actor Leonardo Di Caprio.

Says Shah Rukh, “Leonardo, Martin and I spent some time together. Martin was gracious enough to remember that he had met me in Cannes way back in 2002 when I was there for Devdas. He wants to watch Devdas and I’ve promised to send it to him. I’ll do so right way.”

After the glorious performance in My Name Is Khan as a physically-disabled underdog journeying across America on a whimsical mission, Shah Rukh Khan is all set to play the super-hero flying across the sky to save humanity.

True to its mythological title, Ra.1 which starts shooting next month in Mumbai followed by Goa and London, will have Shah Rukh combating 10 villains. Raavan according to Hindu mythology, was a ten-headed demon whom Ram vanquished single-handedly.

In Ra.1, the modern day Raavan has been turned into ten different villains whom super-hero Shah Rukh, the modern day Ram will annihilate one after another.

Shah Rukh Khan seemed remarkably relaxed in Berlin on the day after his film My Name Is Khan opened in Mumbai accompanied by violent protests by the Shiv Sena.

Said Shah Rukh from Berlin, “I missed the opening in Mumbai. But I believe people have liked the film. I’m being told I’m in character. That’s good to hear. Give me a character to be in, and I’m right there.”

The SRK brand of humour was intact when told that My Name Is Khan doesn’t look like a Karan Johar film. At his deadliest deadpan best SRK retorted, “Yeah, even I felt like that when I first saw it. I told Karan, ‘Arrey yaar yeh tum ne kaisi picture banayee hai?’ Actually the three ladies in our lives Hiroo Aunty (Karan’s mother Hiroo Johar), Kajol and Gauri have made this film.”

Getting serious SRK said, “I thought it would take audiences a little time to come to terms with the film. But I am glad it was well-received.”

After playing the under-dog in two successive films Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and My Name Is Khan (we aren’t counting his guest appearance in Dulha Mil Gaya) Shah Rukh will be flying across the sky in Ra.1. The estimated budget of the film to be produced by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies, is Rs 100 crores. And no Kareena Kapoor won’t be joining him in midair. She plays Shah Rukh’s grounded wife and not a super-woman.

Says a source close to Ra.1, “Kareena was keen to attempt the hi-jinks with Shah Rukh, especially since Agent Vinod where she has a lot of stunts has again been postponed But in Ra.1 all the conflict involves Shah Rukh and the ten villains.”

Shah Rukh along with the film’s director Anubhav Sinha and journalist-writer Mushtaq Sheikh, has co-written Ra.1 and will be credited as one of the writers.

The film will be in Hindi. Says the source, “He was advised to make the film in English. But Shah Rukh decided to make it in Hindi. Why should he pitch his super-hero film to the Western audience when they already have their Superman and Spiderman? Shah Rukh has no aspirations of cracking Hollywood on their terms.”

The film requires the star to perform never-before heart-in-the-mouth stunts, which he’s gearing up to do.

While Naseeruddin Shah at 60, would be Priyanka Chopra’s oldest husband in Saat Khoon Maaf (earlier entitled Ek Batta Saath), Neil Nitin Mukesh has just been signed to play her youngest husband.

Though age-wise, Neil is a few months older than Priyanka, Neil, it is reliably learnt, initially felt he would look incompatible with her.

Says a source, “Neil didn’t want another situation like Aa Dekhen Zara where everyone commented on how incompatible Bipasha and he looked. At the same time, he’s a big fan of Priyanka’s work. So when he heard that his colleague Ranbir Kapoor was working with Priyanka and prepared himself to match Priyanka’s maturity level (Ranbir has stubbled, lean red-eyed look in Anjaana Anjaani), Neil was game for it.”

Neil’s character will require a heavy physical transformation. He will apparently be unrecognizable on screen.

Says Neil from the location for Yashraj Films’ Lafange Parinday, “When I heard the script, I was zapped. This was something I had to do. I play one of Priyanka’s husbands, the youngest of the lot. The fact that I get to be in the same film as actors like Naseeruddin Shah and Mohanlalji was incentive enough. I read even Irrfan Khan is in the film.” (However sources close to the project deny Irrfan’s casting).

While all the actors playing Priyanka’s husbands (and these include an unknown American actor) have been finalized , the seventh actor is yet to be finalized.

Neil starts shooting for Saat Khoon Maaf from April. “I’ve a somewhat crowded date diary this year. I join Abbas-Mustan from June to December for The Italian Job.”

Neil, who moved to Powai to be near Yashraj Studios to avoid the daily traffic to and from South Mumbai, is wondering if he made the right move.

“The traffic on that side of town is just as bad. It’s excruciating to travel even from Powai to Yashraj Studios. On Thursday, I had a day off and I invited my mom over to do up my new home the way I wanted it.”

Neil, who has been a part of a joint family household all his life, says he has no time to miss his family in Powai. “Because I use that old flat of ours only to sleep….alone!”

No sooner that the controversy around SRK’s comments on Pakistani cricket players has settled down, the actor finds himself in yet another controversy related to the IPL.

This time round, it’s the courtesy of inner wear brand Lux Cozy, of which, SRK is the recently appointed brand ambassador. The story goes that, since SRK is the brand ambassador of the said brand, it was rest understood as to they will be sponsoring the uniforms for Khan’s T-20 team Kolkata Knight Riders, besides a monetary angle of course. All was well so far. Now the twist in the tale is that the Lux Company is owned by the Todi brothers (Ashok and Pradip). They are the same Todi brothers who were charged with apparently leading to the suicide of computer graphics designer Rizwanur Rehman, a Muslim, after he married Ashok Todi’s daughter Priyanka, who was a Hindu by religion.

This news had made it to the national headlines and remained atop for quite sometime. This ’sponsorship’ move by SRK for KKR with the said brand has not been taken kindly by many. That’s the reason why it has sparked anger in many people’s heart. Not just that, since it has a religious pinch to it, a few religious bodies too have come in the forefront to express their opposition. In the lieu of all this, there has been a meeting that has been arranged which will include artistes, actors, dancers, writers, performers and also a few prominent names express solid opposition to the controversial tie-up.

After all the hype and hoopla, Aamir Khan has finally withdrawn his resignation from the HRD ministry in lieu of the recent controversy regarding the altercation between him and renowned lyricist Javed Akhtar. Aamir reconsidered his decision only after the intervention of the HRD Minister Kapil Sibal.

Aamir, in his letter to Sibal, said, “I have given a lot of thought to your request to take back my resignation and be a part of my committee. I have also read the letter of the other members have written to you reiterating their faith in me. The amendment to the Copyright Act (of 1957) is an extremely important process, indeed historic. In light of the above, I take back my resignation.”

Sibal had told Aamir to reconsider his decision after he quit from the panel earlier this week.
